Korsten Bowling and Arcade1

Korsten Bowling and Arcade1

The Design brief for this project was for the design of a 10 Pin Bowling Alley and arcade in the heart of Korsten - a previously disadvantaged neighbourhood. Korsten is rife with vandals and crime and hence the building needed to be designed accordingly. The building was to form an icon amongst the community encouraging safe fun amongst all the age groups.

The main conceptual idea for this project was to create a central isle in the building that all the functions/programmes of the building can be accessed or viewed from. This also serves to allow the two businesses to operate individually while still sharing the same public circulation and facilities. The functions on either side of the isle can be closed simply by roller shutters. this allows for the building to have one entrance and set of circulation paths allowing for maximum safety and secur

in keeping with the idea of the building, the bowling lanes were divided into fours and placed over a series of levels to enhance the visibility of the space. Therefore none of the spaces are deep dark ones in which criminal activity can take place in. The building sets up an array of viewing areas to watch and experience the activities which are taking place on the various levels. With the bowling lanes being split up, an opportunity to demarcate the entire upper level to VIP lanes/private func

This project required a design proposal for a Residence to cater for Married students attending NMMU. The proposal had to include a variety of shops/services and different types of units to cater for married students and their children if needed. The site has a 12m drop from the top street to the bottom. The site also had a street cutting through it, providing a challenge in linking the two pieces of site together to create a uniform space.

From contextual analysis - site acts as a buffer zone between the highly commercial bottom end of the site and very residential side on the top. Mixed use nature of the building blurs the distictive line between the two and becomes a hub for the intended programme - married students. The site is very integrated into the historic core of PE and the building proposed should not interrupt this, instead create harmony between old and new. This is achieved by being sensitive to the surrounding buildi

The Victoria road elevation picks up elements from the existing street elevations around the site as well as from the Donkin heritage buildings. The southern side of the site is across from a church, this church lacks the public forecourt buildings of its nature should posses. This saw the opportunity to create a more public forecourt which borders the site and allows easy access to the more public services the building offers. The road is to be paved along this forecourt to slow vehicular movem

The brief called for the design proposal of a new Observatory to be Built in Despatch. The observatory would be sponsored by an overseas organization promoting astronomy education in South Africa. The building could be placed anywhere on the school grounds. The building had to house two telescopes. The observatory will become the new headquarters for the Amateur Astronomical society, this should be able to function seperately from the educational side of the building.

- The building branches off from the centrally located foyer/exhibition space which allows the three components of the building to be utilized individually. - The telescopes are placed as to be seen from everywhere in the building and skylights placed in the roof to aid in the viewing of the open telescope roofs from inside the building. - There are two outdoor viewing areas, one on the north and a raised one on the south of the building with storage accessible from the outside of the building.

- An informal outdoor grand stand/seating is set up for larger informal school visits or exhibitions. Placed on axis found on school grounds (pathways, passages, points of interest) Entrance emphasized by walking through the two telescopes, thus defining two distinct areas, namely the project (scholar areas) and the more private society viewing/socialising area. Seen as an icon amongst the school but doesn't over power (Levels in line with existing school)
